Fondée en 1931 à Los Angeles par Adolph Rickenbacker (industriel d’origine suisse) et George Beauchamp, Rickenbacker est reconnue pour avoir créé la première guitare électrique commercialement viable : la "Frying Pan" (poêle à frire), une guitare lap steel électromagnétique.
